Process

@apple is Apple's global Instagram account. Thirty-seven million followers, one editorial voice, and most of the feed shared from the community under #ShotoniPhone. Work marked "Commissioned by Apple" is the exception, original pieces produced for the account rather than found on it.

The easy version of commissioned content is to hand a creator a phone and post whatever comes back. What you get is their work, in their voice, with an iPhone somewhere in the credits. The harder version holds two stories in the same frame. The creator's, told with full freedom. And the product's, told through what the camera is visibly doing. Getting both into a single Instagram post is the brief.

The work started with the curation. Subjects that exist nowhere else, paired with creators who already had a relationship with them. A monkey buffet in Lop Buri, where the town lays out a feast for its macaques once a year. The Đông Tảo chicken of northern Vietnam, dragon-footed, yellow-eyed, believed to bring good fortune. Three masters of camouflage from the Bornean rainforest. Ratoh Jaroe, an Acehnese dance, paired with new music until tradition stopped looking like the past. Each subject was chosen because it asked something specific of the camera. Each creator was chosen because they'd shoot it the way they'd shoot it for themselves.

From there, the role sat inside the production. Briefs that set the frame without dictating the shot. Time on location with the creators where the shoot called for it, working through the choices that decide whether a product story lands: how close, which light, how long to hold. Then the edit, where the story stayed theirs and the product made its case in the details. Camouflage at 48MP that rewards a second look. Monster feet in close-up. A dance held steady enough to feel like a film.

Four hyperlocal pieces for Apple's global account, made in Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia. Work the home audience could be proud to see represented, and the rest of the world could look at knowing the camera that made it was already in their pocket.
