An irreverent iPad guide to Singapore, made for the country's SG50 creative showcase, Singapore: Inside Out.

Process

Singapore turned 50 in 2015. The official creative showcase, Singapore: Inside Out, was government-commissioned to tour Beijing, London, and New York's Madison Square Park, with 20 invited artists, designers, chefs, and musicians representing the country's contemporary creative scene.

The conventional move would have been a glossy tourism piece. Clean city, safe streets, efficient transport, green spaces. Singapore on its best behaviour, again.

Zinegapore took the other route. An interactive iPad e-zine that celebrated the country through its quirks, its acronyms, its hawker heroes, its everyday absurdities. The Certificate of Entitlement compared to what the same money could buy in other cities. A Singlish guide called Chicken Duck Talk. A trash bin spotting game called BINoculars to poke at the cleanliness reputation. A landscape-orientation Easter egg revealing Singapore's "underworld," viewer discretion advised.

The voice did the heavy lifting. Honest, self-deprecating, in on the joke. The animation and illustration carried the texture, hand-drawn, frame-by-frame, the kind of interactive craft that print folks drool over (AIGA Eye on Design's words, not ours).

The work won a Graphite Pencil and a Wood Pencil at D&AD 2016, for Art Direction in Mobile Marketing and Writing for Apps and Digital Design. The exhibition travelled. The guide travelled with it.

A national 50th birthday, told through its warts and all.
